Collection Profile for:
Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Herbarium (GND)

The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GNDNERR) located in coastal Mississippi is in the process of expanding its herbarium of vascular and non-vascular specimens from a local to a regional scale collection to support research and outreach at the Reserve and beyond. This small (~1000 specimens) but growing collection aims to be a representative plant inventory of the unique coastal habitats found in the northern Gulf coast. The GNDNERR herbarium recently received a generous donation of approximately 1300 specimens collected across the southeast (FL, MS, AL, GA) by Dr. Andre Clewell and his colleagues. The Reserve staff and volunteers are currently in the process of integrating these specimens into the GNDNERR collection on SERNEC. By sharing this collection, we hope to enlist outside expertise and provide information to potential researchers. An unusual feature of the collection is that most newly collected specimens have a corresponding field observation on iNaturalist, and these observations are referenced on the specimen sheets and in SERNEC.
