Collection Profile for:
St. George Village Botanical Garden Herbarium (SGBG-SGBG)

The Herbarium of the St. George Village Botanical Garden is a collection of about 6,000 plant specimens which represent about 80% of the plant species known to be growing in the U.S. Virgin Islands. These specimens are physical examples of plants that were collected at a documented location and time. There are examples of specimens that have been collected during the last 50 years which are no longer found growing in particular sites, but the herbarium specimen remains as proof it existed in a particular time and place. This very important research and historical collection is open to researchers by appointment only.

Based on 5,608 specimen records in the collection, the flora is taxonomically diverse, representing 152 plant families, 645 genera, and 1,206 species (1,230 total taxa including subspecies and varieties). The collection is strongly centered in the United States (5,548 records), with the Virgin Islands (U.S.) accounting for the majority (5,400 records), particularly St. Croix (4,305 records). Identification quality is high, with 95% of specimens determined to species level.

This distribution reflects a strong representation of tropical and subtropical coastal, dry forest, and grassland elements consistent with Virgin Islands flora. The dominance of Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Malvaceae highlights the ecological importance of legumes, grasses, and mallows in Caribbean habitats, while families such as Rubiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Myrtaceae underscore the diversity of woody shrubs and trees characteristic of island ecosystems. Overall, the collection shows both strong taxonomic breadth and clear ecological structure, providing a solid foundation for floristic, conservation, and biogeographic research, particularly within St. Croix and the wider U.S. Virgin Islands region.
